Tyke
The Kanata Knights Tykes squad took to the field at Ken Steele Park on Ogilvie Road two days after Halloween to take on the East Ottawa Generals. One team would earn a trip to a Championship Cup game, the other would be hanging up their cleats and packing away helmets and shoulder pads until next spring. The Generals came hurtling out of the gate, appearing to overwhelm the Knights early scoring on their first possession for a 6-0 lead and then recovering the ensuing kickoff and scoring once again to push the lead to 14-0 after a successful two point convert. Once again, it was the Kanata defense that ignited the team with a timely stand putting the offense back on the field late in the first half. The fleet footed Patrick Massia raced to the sideline and into open space to put the Knights back in the game at 14-6 on what appeared to be the final drive of the half. However the few seconds remaining in the half were enough for the Generals to run the single play it would take to push their first half lead to 22-6. Whatever was said on the Kanata sideline during halftime was clearly understood by the Knights as they quickly seized the momentum in the second half driving to the East Ottawa 1 yard line before a determined O-line cleared the way for a easy Kanata touchdown narrowing the score to 22-12. A punt return downed by Kanata in the endzone made the score 23-12 before Connor Ogilvie snatched a fumble recovery to set up another Kanata scoring drive to make the score 23-18, setting up a thrilling finish. The Knights lined up for the onside kick and appeared to recover the ball after the short kick was touched first by a Generals player. The men in stripes inexplicably awarded the ball to the Generals and it was left to the Big Blue D to give the offense one more possession. The Knights defense made it 3-and-out for the Generals keeping their slim hopes alive as the offense raced back onto the field. With eight seconds on the clock the ball was put in to hands of Patrick Massia and he appeared to break free to the sideline with one man to beat, but the Generals defender came up with a game saving tackle, stunning the Kanata fans into momentary silence and bringing the Knights season to a close. This Tykes squad, no stranger to adversity this season, played with determination and a commitment to their coaches, each other, and themselves belies their young age. They battled all the way to the final whistle, not one single player offering up an ounce of quit, in the end earning something that will be with them long after trophies have lost their glimmer - and that is character.
