Kanata Knights Midget Team
Drops To Third Place
|

|
The Kanata Knights Midget team was the only squad that
played this past weekend taking on the much improved
Nepean Redskins. It was an extremely important
game as the winner of this match would determine first
place position and home field advantage for the upcoming
playoffs. Fans will recall that the last game
resulted in a win for the Knights with a low scoring
3-2 decision.
Although the Knights had a very strong start that saw
its Midget team win its first seven games, injuries
to many of its starters including QB Mark Packard just
before the weekend put the Knights at a slight disadvantage.
In the opening series of plays, the Knights offense
fumbled the ball on their own 30 yard line allowing
the Redskins to recover and score on their first drive.
The second series of offensive plays resulted in a 2-point
safety and a touchdown late in the half put the Redskins
ahead with a 15-0 lead. In the second half,
the Redskins defense continued to dominate stripping
the ball off the Knights offense on a run up the middle
and returned it into the end zone to go ahead 22-0.
The Knights managed to score late in the game when Shane
Nolan on a quarterback option ran 23 yards into the
end zone.
Despite the 22-7 score, it did not really reflect how
closely matched the two teams were. Two offensive
turnovers made the difference in the game and it is
expected that when these two teams potentially meet
in the playoffs, the outcome will likely be quite different.
Head Coach Larry Cates was extremely pleased with the
efforts put forward by his players including Justin
Patenaude who rushed for 101 yards, Nick White and Matt
Renaud who played both sides of the ball combining for
several tackles while on defense and opened holes for
the Knights running game while on offense. Midget
rookie Mike Richards also showed great talent and was
one of the team’s leading tacklers.
Next Action
All five Knights teams play next Sunday, October 22
at KRC field with the Tykes, Mosquitos, Pee Wees and
Bantams playing the Raiders and the Midgets competing
against the Dukes.
