The Kanata Knights Bantams and Midgets remained undefeated
and in first place in their respective Divisions with
victories over the Bantam Redskins and Midget Mustangs
this past weekend. The Tykes, Mosquitos and PeeWees
didn’t fair as well losing to the Nepean Redskins at
all three levels.
Tyke
The Kanaka Knights Tykes lost a heartbreaker to the
Nepean Redskins Tykes by a score of 7 - 6. Once again
the defense was a key factor in keeping the Knight’s
in the game. The Redskins offence proved challenging
early but the Knights coaching staff made some strategic
adjustments that stopped Nepean in their tracks. The
teams battled toe to toe throughout much of the game
and the final score was not settled until the final
seconds when Knights QB Sam Kronick blasted a throw
with scoring precision to Levi Neeson who had “deeked”
his way into the end zone for the touchdown. The Knights
attempted a 2 point convert on the ensuing play but
were shut down by the Redskins to lose their first game
of the year. Malon Head once again put in a solid
performance and was a threat throughout the game as
he racked up close to 40 all purpose rushing and receiving
yardage. Notable rushing yardage was also contributed
by Jake Hamm and Amar Singh.
Logan McKenna continues to rule supreme on the field
playing both defense and offense. McKenna led the Knights
to several passing and rushing first downs while recording
18 tackles and a fumble recovery on defense. Other defensive
standouts were Grant Moser with 7 punishing tackles,
Connor Smallwood and Robbie Clements with 6 tackles
each and rookie player Devin Saumur with 5. The
remainder of the defensive line up combined for 30 hard
hitting tackles.
Mosquito
Despite playing a hard game the Kanata Knights Mosquitos
lost to the Redskins Mosquitos by a 32 – 0 score. The
O-Line “hoggies” drove hard to help the offence to several
first downs, but unfortunately the Redskins won with
their strong passing game to take the annual Broadway
Cup. John Ladurantaye was the offensive star rushing
for 59 yards while Curtis Wagner punted for an average
of 20 yards each time he booted the ball.
Mitch Graham led the defense with 6 tackles and 1 interception
while Evan Swire had 4 tackles and 1 sack and Eric Oneschuk,
Seb Rios and Mike Zadra combined for 9 tackles. Close
on their tails with 2 tackles each were Ben Tremblay,
Devin McIntyre, Emil Aite, Vince Galea, and Spencer
Cates. The squad worked as a team for 10 group tackles
and Zack Palmer was credited with a batted ball.
PeeWee
The PeeWee Knights played their best game of the
season but came out on the short end of a 2 – 0 score
in a defensive battle against the undefeated Redskins
PeeWees. The games only points came from a safety conceded
by Kanata in the first half. Nick Ziai led the Knights
offence with 31 yards rushing while steady receiver
Eric Poulin had 3 catches for 31 yards. David Dunnigan
had 2 receptions for 22 yards as QB Sam Lawrence showed
great poise behind a revamped offensive line.
The defense, despite losing leaders Dominic Heallis
and Dean Edwards to game ending injuries, turned in
a great effort. Dallon Kuprowski led with 10 tackles,
Connor da Costa had 9 and Cody Henry had 8. Adam ''The
Sauce'' Tatar, Taylor Jackson and Duncan McCabe all
had a hand in sacking the Redskins QB 3 times. Tyrone
Afram and da Costa each forced a fumble and Sean Colby
had 1 fumble recovery. The defense also stopped the
Redskins inside their own 20 yard line several times.
Bantam
The Bantam Knights kept their undefeated streak alive
by thumping the previously undefeated Redskins Bantams
43 – 6. The defending City Champs were shaky at
times but rose to the occasion when it mattered most.
Defense wreaked havoc on the ‘Skins’ all afternoon with
constant pressure and punishing tackles. Andrew
Jones had the play of the game by capitalizing on a
blocked punt and rambling in for the major score.
The Redskins offence was all but shut down through
the air and didn’t fair much better along the ground.
Brad Gorgichuk and Joey Timpson made anyone in a burgundy
jersey pay the price for touching the ball. Special
teams got into the act with Brandon Pidgeon and Spencer
da Costa playing key roles in causing turn-overs. Place
kicker Godwin Addai kept working his magic, booting
for 12 points including a 38 yard field goal.
Taylor Kuprowski proved all but unstoppable on offence
with 147 all purpose yards and touchdowns by ground
and by air. Ryan Ireland continued the aerial
display by tossing to Jordan Singbeil in the end-zone
for a spectacular one hand grab while Shane Hills scooped
up another Ireland pass and eluded several defenders
to scamper for a 35 yard major.
Midget
The Kanata Knights Midget squad remained undefeated
and in first place in the NCAFA Midget conference with
a tight 10 – 7 victory over the Canterbury Mustangs
at Frank Claire Stadium. The Knights waited until the
last 45 seconds of the game to seal the victory when
Bill Fletcher found himself open in the end zone and
made a clutch grab on an 8 yard TD strike from QB Mark
Packard. Fletcher and team mate Markus Lovell both had
spectacular afternoons each making 5 catches and combining
for close to 200 yards. Justin Patenaude rounded out
the scoring for the Knights with an 11 yard field goal
early in the game.
The defense had a strong afternoon forcing 7 Canterbury
turnovers – 5 fumbles and 2 interceptions. If not for
some untimely penalties on the Mustangs only TD drive,
the Knights would have come away with a shut-out. Leading
tacklers for the Knights were James Campbell, Nathan
Quigley and Nick White. Fumble recoveries were recorded
by Matt Scott, Brad Smith, Nicholas Konan, Corey Armstrong
and Michael Saikai while Moe Njau and Mike Richards
each picked off errant Mustang passes.
