The Kanata Knights opened their 2006 exhibition season
this past weekend in Cumberland and won games at the
Tyke and Bantam levels while losing at Mosquito and
Pee Wee levels.
Tyke
The Kanata Knights Tykes stormed onto the Panthers
home field August 13th and delivered a convincing, first
time in 9 years, pre-season win over Cumberland.
Levi Neeson led the scoring with 2 TDs including
a spectacular 80 yard run to the end zone. Evan Youth
put on a show as starting QB with 36 rushing yards,
65 kick off yards and a 20 yard punt. Sam Kronick
proved an offensive power racking up a 40 yard TD run,
2 successful convert conversions and 33 rushing yards
while Mahlon Head had 33 all purpose yards.
The defense kept the team in the game with an outstanding
performance from Logan McKenna who had 19 tackles, an
interception, a fumble recovery, a QB sack and a 20
yard kick off. Contributions from the ever solid veteran
players Connor Smallwood, Kyle Morley and Carter Poulin
with 6 tackles each helped solidify the win. Rookie
players Grant Moser and Tyler Moffat impressed the scouts
with 6 and 3 tackles respectively.
Mosquito
The Mosquitos played a hard fought game in a loss
against a larger veteran team from Cumberland. The offense
moved the ball well in the first half and showed great
promise in both running and passing. Sebastian Rios
picked up 58 yards rushing followed by John Ladurantaye
with 30 yards and several big blocks. The defense was
solid even with 4 veterans away and 2 injured. Mitch
Graham, David Nguyen, Chase Renaud and Evan Swire lead
the team in tackles with 6 each.
PeeWee
It was a tough battle for the Kanata Knight PeeWee's
who came out with enthusiasm to play their first exhibition
game against the Cumberland Panthers. Although defeated,
the coaches assessed many players at different positions
and were pleased with the performance of the team on
the field. Work will continue next week in preparation
for the final exhibition game.
Bantam
The Bantam Knights and Panthers picked up where they
left off in last years City Championship with the Knights
prevailing in a 16 – 2 victory. Kanata started off strong
building up a 10 – 0 first quarter lead on the strength
of a perfectly executed over the shoulder 52 yard catch
by Jordan Singbeil on a toss from QB Ryan Ireland and
a 30 yard field goal off of the toe of rookie Goodwin
Addai. The two teams settled into a typical Kanata-Cumberland
defensive struggle in the second and third quarters
with no points being scored. The Knights defense, missing
some key players from last years championship team again
demonstrated that they will be a force to be reckoned
with this year by limiting the Panthers offensive attack.
Solid performances were turned in by veterans Shane
Sabourin, Joey Timpson, Brad Gorgichuk and Kyle MacLellan
who were instrumental in two fourth quarter goal line
stands which provided the offence with breathing room
to march up the field and salt away the victory with
a 12 yard TD ramble by Goodwin Addai on the last play
of the game.
The Knights conclude their exhibition season on Sunday
August 20 at the Kanata Recreation Complex Field with
games against the West Carleton Wolverines. Action begins
at 9:30 am. Come out and support minor football in Kanata.
